We still claim to be the easiest station to submit music to. A quick reminder would be, that we are not an indie station, so we don’t play indie 24/7. It is very selective, and we don’t play everything that comes in. The other item to consider is the station is programmed for maximum exposure to those artists that get played. We do not do one off’s in a show. We put the music into rotation, so it plays mixed with mainstream hits, 7 days a week. The exception to that is our Indie Showcases on Sunday mornings on both stations. KB Radio and KB Country radio are here for listeners. If we can help artists along the way that is amazing.

This update was required because of AI in the music industry and everywhere else these days. This has forced me into a position, like so many other stations, to create a policy for KB Radio and KB Country Radio for the submission of AI-related music.

Here are 2 versions of our submission policy, short and long.

Short Version

NO AI. We needed to decide how much to allow and how to regulate and the simple answer is none. No AI.

Submit music to kbradiomusic@outlook.com

Be sure to include a bio, some information of some kind, social media links

Song(s) must be attached or through Dropbox, Google Drive etc.

We ask for the most recent release for you and an alternative in case the first song doesn’t fit the station profile.

Please try and tag your songs, and give us a couple weeks to get to your email. Things not to do:

Do NOT send a blank email with no words, just a song attached

Do Not send streaming links only.

Do NOT expect us to read your email in the next 24 hours.

Do not send an album and say pick a song.

Do NOT send a link to your entire catalogue (yes artists have done that)

Do Not send an email asking or demanding to know why we won’t play your song.

Do NOT send the same email over and over because we haven’t responded fast enough in your mind. (You will get warned and you will get blocked from emailing and any future plays)

Do Not send a link using something like we transfer with an expiration date on it.

DO NOT REGISTER US FOR AIRPLAY DIRECT OR ANY SERVICE!

We try and make it as easy as possible, you can send WAV or FLAC etc. Your Metadata doesn’t have to be perfect like some stations demand. We also try to reply to every email. If we tell you we can’t use your song, I know its discouraging, however I run a very tightly formatted operation and only 1 out of every 10 songs makes it to the main programming on KB or KB Country.

That’s the short version. The long version with more wordy explanations is below. It says the same thing but I will explain some of my reasoning.

I find myself in the unenviable position to say that we will not be allowing any AI on the stations. Many people have said they use it for various aspects, from the recording of instrumentation to the mixing to final production to, you name it, but the biggest problem we run into is that nobody tells us that. It is hard to determine what is AI and what is not. We have found that when we ask artists who have submitted music if AI was used in the creation, they often say no. Then we will find things like the song listed on the Suno website because it was created there. If people would be honest, it will be a lot easier to deal with, but since nobody seems to want to admit to using it, we will just have to focus on no AI at this point.

This leads into my second topic, which is about songwriters and music on the stations. The role of the KB stations is just that: to be radio stations. They are to entertain listeners. It’s not there as a tool for songwriters to promote their songwriting skills. I apologize for that, but you wouldn’t call your local FM station and ask about a song and have them say, “Oh, I don’t know who sang that, but the songwriter was this.” That’s not our job either.

My job is to entertain my listeners to the best of our ability. A great deal of time and effort went into the rotation, the programming of specific types of songs at certain times of the day throughout the day. Every hour of every day is programmed in a specific way so that when you start the hour, a certain category of song will play at the start of each hour. Maybe not the same category every hour, but it’s a very specific group. At the end of that hour, once again a very specific type of song will play. Between those two songs, thirteen other songs I’m an old school radio guy. Think of it this way: it used to be when a band released an album, like Queen or Journey or whoever your favorite artist was, they would release one song. That song would do whatever it did, climb the charts, whatever was possible. When it started to taper off, they would release the next song, the third or the fourth or however many they had intended to do.

If you want to submit your music, if you’re an artist or promoter, we have a very simple process. Send us an email at kbradiomusic@outlook.com with the song that you would like to promote.

When you submit, we request one or two songs. Feel free to send us a second song in case the first one that you want to promote doesn’t work.

Now, be prepared: if we add your song to our rotation, we plan on playing that song over and over again for the next 30 to 60 days. It has opportunities, possibly, to join the charts, get more airplay, and more exposure. We’re not about programming multiple songs from the same artist; we want to promote one song, push it, and then move on to the next.

We appreciate those who want to work with us. We ask that, when you send an email with your music submission, include:

– any bio

– some information about the artist or the band

– anything you’d like to share

– social media links

– anything that would be helpful

When it comes to the format of the song, be it MP3 or WAV/FLAC, it doesn’t really matter. We are not particular, and we will make whatever you send us work. We prefer good studio quality submissions, and it’ll be nice if you tagged everything for us now. Saying that we’re going to change the tags anyways, not to take anything away, but to make sure that when your song is broadcast it is displayed in the same process as every other song, with the song title and the artist name clearly there for listeners so they can see who it is.

I told you it was easy. That’s all it takes. You can send your music to us, and we will be glad to hear it and possibly play it. Remember, because we aren’t in any station, we only play approximately 10% of the music that comes into the stations. We try to get to everybody as quickly as possible. We’re sometimes three to four weeks, but from what I understand, that’s still better than most. We do our best and we try to reply to everybody as well. Whether we will play it or not, we will let you know one way or the other.

Now, for what we don’t want really is quite simple as well:

1. Please don’t send an album and say “pick a song”. We don’t have the time. Send us one or two, as mentioned, or a focus track or two, and we’ll be happy to listen to those. I’d be happy to add the album to my collection as well, very graciously.

2. Don’t send Spotify or YouTube links and expect us to try and get it from there. We need either the song attached or through download.com or Google Drive or whatever service that you want to attach it with to get the music to us.

Much like sending an album, don’t send your entire catalog or a link to it and say “Play what we would like again.” We don’t have the time, and we want to focus on the songs that you wish to promote at that time.

4. This one’s very easy: when you send us an email, write something, anything. I will tell you straight out if I get an email with a song attached and there isn’t a single word in the message. I will give it the same amount of time you took to type that message. None. We won’t even listen. If you want us to play your music, you could at least take ten seconds to write a simple message.

The only other thing I would like to ask is: many artists have become, it seems, almost more entitled, feeling and will constantly send me emails asking why we won’t play their music.

There are many reasons we won’t play a song. Maybe it doesn’t fit the format. Maybe the sound quality or production isn’t good, but my job is not to critique your music and tell you what’s wrong with it or what’s right with it, because what I think is wrong may not be wrong for you. I know what I’m looking for on my radio stations, and that’s what we program. If it doesn’t fit that criteria, then it won’t get played. We will send out a general thank you: we can’t use your music at this time. Hopefully that’s good enough. I have never once written an artist back and said, “Hey, I’m not playing your song because it sucked.” I never will, and I hope you can accept the way we do it.

A great deal of time and effort goes into our weekly programming of the stations. We get over a thousand emails each month with new music submissions. Again, 10% of those are going to make it to the air. That’s an awful lot of music that’s not getting played. Doesn’t mean it’s not good. It just means it’s not where we want it to be for our station, but we want you to keep submitting because many times I’ve had an artist send two or three songs and they didn’t sound right, but the fourth one maybe was. Feel free to send us your music; we’ll gladly listen to it and we will share it when we can and promote it as much as we can.

We have listeners in 177 countries around the world.

We will continue to strive to provide the best quality programming, the best sounding music at all times.

As always we welcome comments and suggestions.

There you have it, long and short versions to submit. I watch other stations etc, how they program, how they want music submitted and you know what. How they do it all is there business. The same as how we do ours is mine. When we play you, you become a part of our family. Trust me for those who like to work within the family you won’t find any better.

Al yardy

After 11 years with KB Radio, I’m proud to say that very little has changed with our submission process over the years.
